8 Sprinkler Questions Asked By Nampa Homeowners

Pro Sprinkler Repair is a local service company, based in Idaho, that provides many sprinkler services. We have years of experience in irrigation repair and proud to be based in the Treasure Valley. Today we will be answering eight common questions that our Nampa, Idaho homeowners have regarding their lawn sprinkler system.

Should I repair or replace my sprinkler system?

The answer to this question will be different for each customer. Most homeowners opt for repairing the main sprinkler issues because of cost. This is the right choice for fixing sprinkler heads, minor leaks, or drip irrigation. However, certain factors that may justify installing an entirely new sprinkler system. Conditions where a new system is recommendable may include changing the landscape (such as adding a patio or pool, the system is old and not able to perform, the original design of the system does not allow for proper coverage, or root intrusion has rendered the system inoperable. If you are experiencing any of these sprinkler problems, it may be the right time to replace your sprinkler system.

How much does it cost to repair a sprinkler system?

Pro Sprinkler Repair charges a $125 service charge for basic repairs. This may include fixing a broken sprinkler head, diagnosing a low water pressure issue, or fixing broken sprinkler lines. The first repair is included in this service charge. The following repairs are not covered by the service charge: repairs to sprinkler valves, controller replacements, breaks caused by root intrusion, or replacing sprinkler lines. If your sprinkler system needs additional repairs, we will provide a free estimate to include the necessary repairs. Free estimates allow customers to anticipate the cost of the sprinkler system repairs.

What is the cost to replace a sprinkler valve?

Replacing sprinkler valves is a common repair for sprinkler systems that older than 10 years. The average cost to replace a sprinkler valve ranges between $300-$600, depending on how many valves are put together in the box. Each valve adds fittings, lines, and wiring to the project. Replacing sprinkler valves requires that the box be dug up to manipulate the pipes and access the components. Pro Sprinkler replaces every valve in the box, in order to effectively warrantee the repair and provide the best service possible.

How much does it cost to replace a solenoid on a sprinkler system?

Solenoids one of the electrical components of the sprinkler valve. It communicates with the controller and opens the valve. The cost of a replacement solenoid is around $20. To have this repair done by the skilled technicians at Pro Sprinkler, this service costs $125. For the DIYers, the best place to purchase replacement solenoids is online. To replace a solenoid you must first turn off the water. Then, unwire the 2 wires on the original solenoid you are replacing. Unscrew the solenoid from the valve. Check that the new solenoid has a healthy O-ring in place. Screw in the new solenoid and wire in the same fashion as the previous one. Turn on the water and test the sprinkler zone from the controller to see if it works.

How to repair a sprinkler line?

Making a repair to a sprinkler line is simple in principle, but may prove to be more difficult in practice. First, you must identify where the leak is coming from. Then you must dig up the line with plenty of room along the pipe to work. The line will either be PVC (white) or Polyethylene (black or green). For repairs of PVC lines you must purchase an expandable repair coupling, primer, and glue. PVC pipe is rigid and inflexible. You will cut out the broken section of pipe (Note: PVC pipe commonly breaks at joints and fittings such as tees). You will prepare the pipe and coupler with primer. Once dry, you will add the glue to both the pipe and coupler. Push onto the pipe and hold in place. Follow the instructions on the can for dry time. Conversely, poly pipe is semi-flexible and does not require glue. You can cut out the broken section of poly pipe, insert a coupler, and add hose clamps for an effective repair.

How much does a sprinkler blowout cost?

Sprinkler blowouts or winterizations is a yearly service, performed in the Fall to protect the sprinkler system from freezing temperatures. Pro Sprinkler Repair charges $125 for this service. We connect a powerful air compressor to the system and ‘blowout’ the water from the valves, lines, and heads.

What should I look for when hiring a sprinkler system contractor?

There are many companies to choose from when looking for a sprinkler system contractor. Many customers find that hiring a good company can be frustrating. Missed calls, no-shows, and not so fair prices are a few of the challenges to finding an Idaho sprinkler repair company. That’s why Pro Sprinkler Repair is different. Our motto is, “we answer the phone”. We follow up with timely repairs, a reasonable price, and top notch quality services.

As a new homeowner, what should I know about sprinkler systems?

A healthy lawn with no dry spots wont come without some regular maintenance. Don’t worry, we are here to help. Sprinkler System Winterization Services

Prepare Your Lawn for Winter: The Importance of Fall Winterization Services

As summer fades and autumn settles in, it’s time to shift our focus from summer lawn care to preparing our landscapes for the cold weather ahead. One critical aspect of this transition is ensuring your lawn sprinkler system is properly winterized. At Pro Sprinkler Repair and Installation, we offer comprehensive fall winterization services to protect your investment and ensure your system is ready to go come spring. In this post, we’ll discuss the importance of winterization, the steps involved, and why you should trust us to perform this service.

Sprinkler Winterization

Why Fall Winterization is Essential

Preventing Damage from Freezing Temperatures

One of the most significant risks to your sprinkler system during winter is freezing temperatures. Water left in the pipes can expand when it freezes, leading to cracks and leaks. The components that are most vulnerable are automatic valves, manual valves, and (for those who use potable water) the backflow preventer. Damage to these components can result in expensive repairs and a delayed start to your spring watering schedule. However, the best way to prevent these issues is a professional sprinkler blowout to safeguarding your investment.

Prolonging the Life of Your System

You may not notice damage after missing a single irrigation blowout. However, like any mechanical system, proper maintenance is key to longevity. Regular winterization helps extend the life of your sprinkler system by reducing wear and tear. The electrical valves and heads are more likely to open and close properly and preform effectively next year. When components are well-maintained and protected from the elements, they perform better and require fewer repairs in the long run.

Protecting Your Home

If you’ve ever faced a plumbing issue in the dead of winter, you know how frustrating—and expensive—it can be. By winterizing your system in the fall, you can avoid the hassle and costs associated with repairing freeze damage. Occasionally, sprinkler lines run right up to the foundation of the house. Protecting these lines is particularly important. Investing in our winterization service is a small price to pay for the peace of mind it brings.

What Does Our Winterization Service Include?

At Pro Sprinkler, we provide a thorough winterization process tailored to your specific system. Here’s what you can expect when you schedule our fall winterization service:

Step 1: System Evaluation

Before we begin the winterization process, our skilled technicians will evaluate your entire irrigation system. This first step includes checking for any existing leaks, worn-out components, or potential issues that may need attention before the winter months. Identifying these problems now can provide an excellent opportunity to make the repairs in the off-season. Spring is a competitive and busy time to try to squeeze in belated sprinkler repairs. For more information about our repair services, visit our Repairs Page.

Step 2: Shut Off and Manual Draining

The next step is closing the shut-off valves at the main water supply and draining the excess water from the entire system. Most sprinkler installations are equipped with a manual drain valve at the point of connection. Our team will carefully open the values to allow air in and get the water out of the irrigation lines, valves, and backflow device. If your system is connected to pressurized irrigation, we will drain your filter and main valve.

Step 3: Perform the Blowout

We use a large, tow-behind air compressor to remove the remaining water. This step is crucial to ensuring that the water has been removed from the low points in the system is completely prepared for winter. It is at this point that the extremities of the sprinkler system such as sprinkler heads, drip irrigation system, and other irrigation components such as a hose bib.

Step 4: Final System Check

Lastly, we shut off the automatic timer in the garage. While most of your system will be drained, some components, such as backflow preventers and exposed pipes, may still be susceptible to cold temperatures. We recommend property owners insulate these parts to provide an extra layer of protection against freezing. This includes verifying that all valves are closed, all water has been drained, and any necessary insulation is in place. We’ll also provide you with a report of our findings and any recommendations for repairs or upgrades that may enhance your system’s performance next season.

Disclaimer: Though properly winterized, your sprinkler system may still sustain damage over the winter. Pro Sprinkler does not accept any liability for damage that is caused by freezing.

Tips for Maintaining Your Lawn After the First Freeze

While winterization is crucial, there are additional steps you can take to prepare your lawn for winter. Here are a few tips to help keep your landscape healthy during the colder months:

1. Keep Mowing

As long as your grass is still growing, continue to mow your lawn. Keeping your grass at a manageable height helps prevent disease and encourages healthy growth in the spring.

2. Aerate Your Lawn

Fall is an excellent time to aerate your lawn, allowing nutrients and water to penetrate deeper into the soil. Aeration helps your grass establish a robust root system, which is essential for a healthy lawn come spring.

3. Fertilize Wisely

Applying a fall fertilizer can provide your lawn with the nutrients it needs to thrive over the winter. Look for a fertilizer that promotes root growth and prepares your grass for the cold months ahead.

4. Rake Leaves Regularly

Fallen leaves can suffocate your lawn if left unattended. Rake them up regularly to ensure your grass receives the sunlight and air it needs to stay healthy.

If you suspect that your irrigation system needs repair, it’s important to take action promptly. This is where Pro Sprinkler and Repair comes in. We are not landscapers. We only do sprinklers. Lastly, we bundle all of the routine maintenance of the entire system for the year onto one plan. This saves you time and hassle finding the right person to complete your repair.

Our Process Makes Sprinkler Repair Simple

Our sprinkler repair team is trained to follow the proper procedure to diagnose the sprinkler system repairs. We check the water pressure. If your sprinkler heads aren’t producing a consistent spray pattern, or if some heads aren’t popping up at all, it could be due to low water pressure. Lack of pressure may be caused by broken pipes or clogged filters. Replacing the filter is a common resolution to the lawn sprinkler repair. If a pipe is broken, the water will show us where to dig.

Next, we inspect the sprinkler heads. Broken or damaged sprinkler heads are a common cause of sprinkler problems. Inspecting your sprinkler heads for cracks, leaks, or other signs of damage makes sure that your system is in excellent condition. If we notice any problems, we replace the damaged heads as soon as possible to prevent water waste.

Moving on, sprinkler heads can become clogged with dirt, debris, or other materials. Each sprinkler head comes with a built-in filter. Clocked filters can cause uneven water distribution and other problems. To clear clogs, we remove the sprinkler head and rinse it thoroughly with water. If the clog is stubborn, we may replace the head to ensure that the head will work properly the next time.

We check the valves. If your sprinkler system is divided into zones, each zone will have a valve that controls water flow. If a zone isn’t working, the valve may be stuck or damaged. We may turn the valve on and off to check its function. Valves that are stuck on or off may require valve replacements. This is done by digging up the valves and disconnecting them from the pipes. When using an electric valve, we test the electrical components and the connection to the controller.

Lastly, we test the system. Once we’ve completed any necessary repairs, we test the sprinkler system to ensure it’s working correctly. We run each zone for a few minutes and check for consistent water distribution and coverage. We adjust any heads or settings as needed to ensure optimal water distribution. This prevents brown spots and drainage problems.
